NEW YORK NEEDS FAIR ELECTIONS

[Letter from Dan Cantor, Executive Director, WFP, Posted October 11, 2012]

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson famously pledged to spend as much as $100 million this year to beat President Obama. (It's a pretty smart bet for him, because Mitt Romney's tax plan would give him a $2 billion tax cut!)

And here in New York, real estate developers, gas drillers, Wall Street lobbyists and other corporate hot shots have figured out that big money can grease the wheels in Albany, and make politicians focus on their whims and desires -- not the needs of average voters.

We're backing the Fair Elections plan to take back our democracy. The plan would limit the influence of big money in politics with public financing of elections. And since Gov. Cuomo already supports the plan, it really has a chance. But we need your help to push it through the legislature.

Today, we're launching a new video featuring Law & Order and Newsroom star Sam Waterston, explaining how the plan works.

Click here to watch the video and sign our petition to our legislators in Albany to stop big money’s stranglehold on politics.
We don't have a super PAC to blanket the airwaves with this ad, so we're counting on you to spread the word. After you take action, please share the video with every New Yorker who wants to take our democracy back.

New York has some of the loosest campaign finance rules in America, with the highest contribution levels of any state that sets a limit. The result is a system where a few big contributors bankroll campaigns. That gives them an outsized role in calling the shots in Albany after Election Day, too – on everything from taxes to environmental protections to schools to the minimum wage.

The Fair Elections plan would change that, lowering contribution limits and implementing a system of public financing modeled after the successful system New York City already uses for local elections.
The plan sets up a system where small-dollar contributions leverage public matching funds. This allows candidates without a Rolodex full of lobbyists and wealthy friends to run for office and win. Under the new plan, instead of spending all their time dialing for dollars and attending lobbyist-backed fundraisers, politicians will have to listen to their constituents, even if those without tens of thousands of dollars to throw around.

New Yorkers deserve elected officials who are more responsive to the voters than to a handful of wealthy campaign donors. And passing this plan here will also be a major boost for the national movement to get big money out of Washington.

But we need your help to make sure politicians know we're paying attention. With November coming up, now's the time they're really worried about what we think. So it's time to speak out.

Sign our petition to our elected leaders in Albany to pass the Fair Elections plan right away.

Mitt Romney to America: drop dead --
This November Vote Your Values.
Vote for Pres. Barack Obama on the WFP Ballot Line

[A Recent Letter from Dan Cantor, WFP Executive Director]

Have you seen the video yet?

The one from the $50,000-per-plate fundraiser -- must have been very nice plates -- in which Mitt Romney decided to tell some high-rollers what he really thinks about his “fellow” Americans.

It’s a pretty ugly view of fellowship.

In Romney-world, if you’re out-of-work, you’re a loser. If your parents or grandparents receive Social Security or Medicare, they are phony "victims" who never really contributed and are now taking advantage of a handout.

In Romney-world, if a hungry child eats a subsidized school lunch, well, she’s obviously a free-loader bound to ruin the Republic.

Heck, in Romney-world, if you use the public library, go to a public park for a hike, take a ride on a public bus, well, you’re probably a moocher who doesn’t understand that entrepreneurs are the only people who matter. The real important people are self-made men like Mitt Romney, who did it all on his own!

Ladies and gentlemen, Mitt Romney in his own words:
There are 47 percent who are with [President Obama], who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.[1]
The Romney-Ryan bizarre hatred of the government is out-of control.Government bureaucracy can be annoying, but enough already. All Americans are entitled to quality health care, enough food to survive, and a roof over their heads. Quality education, transit options, cultural programs, libraries, meat inspectors, cops and everything else that makes our society a decent one.

And, with that in mind, today I’m proud to announce that the Working Families Party is endorsing President Barack Obama for reelection.

Join us and pledge to vote for President Obama on the Working Families Party ballot line.

Most New Yorkers are already planning to vote for Obama. He leads in New York State polls by 28 points.[2] But you can make your vote count EVEN MORE by voting for Obama on the Working Families ballot line this November.

Voting for President Obama on the Working Families line sends a message, even as it counts for his overall total. A vote on the WFP line tells your elected officials in Albany and in Washington that you support the WFP's views on jobs and wages, on healthcare and Medicare and Social Security. It's a vote for clean water and against hydrofracking. For getting big money out of elections. For quality public schools no matter where you’re born.

Of course, we don’t agree with President Obama on everything. For one, we wish he’d taken on fraud and corruption on Wall Street more aggressively. But stack him up against the Romney-Ryan team and the choice is an easy one. We need President Obama to win, and then we need to organize like mad to roll back the gains that the Tea Party and their financial backers have made.

And by voting for Obama on the Working Families ballot line on the ballot, you can make your vote count for Obama, but also stand up for your progressive values.

Will you pledge to vote on the Working Families ballot line for Obama?

http://action.workingfamiliesparty.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6622

Reelecting President Obama won't solve all America’s problems. We won't agree with him on everything. And the day after the election, we'll go right back to organizing on the crucial issues of the day, supporting and criticizing as called for.

But until then, we'll support him. We're committing to vote for him. And we're committing to vote for him on the Working Families line. Join us.

Thanks for your support, and make sure to vote! We can’t afford to lose this one.

With nearly half of all working New Yorkers lacking a single paid sick day on the job, the Working Families Party together with a broad coalition is working to pass a bill that would give every worker citywide the right to earn paid leave.

In 2009, 39 City Councilmembers signed on the Paid Sick Time act and our grassroots campaign helped put the issue on the top of the City Hall agenda. TAKE ACTION! Sign the petition to get involved! – Click-on:  http://action.workingfamiliesparty.org/t/3865/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=640
